This series is for people living with chronic low back pain who want a gentle, supported approach to movement. No prior yoga experience is needed.
What to expect:
Before your first session, I will email you a body diagram where you can note areas of pain, discomfort, tightness or tension.
In the first session we will spend 10 minutes or so reviewing where you have discomfort, how long it's been going on, what your goals are - e.g. if you could reduce pain, what would that allow you to do more easily? Hiking? Biking? Skiing? This session will be restorative in style, using small, comfortable movements and supported rest to find ease and help settle back discomfort.
In subsequent sessions, we will review the body diagram again and discuss any changes that have happened since the previous session. We'll also review the suggested postures from the previous week and how you're moving in those ranges of motion. Then we'll progress to new or progressive exercises depending on what we find.
It is very likely that we will work other areas of the body besides the low back. Don't be surprised if we spend an entire session on your shoulders, all in service of easing low back pain.
Later sessions may progress to strengthening or remain restorative depending on your goals.
Props:
Props are provided for in-person sessions. Much of the practice takes place on the floor. If getting down to the floor isn’t possible or comfortable, I can bring a massage table to in-person sessions to bring the practice up to a more accessible height. The table is used for support and height only; this is not hands-on bodywork. You’ll do the movements yourself, though I may offer occasional adjustments with your permission.
For Zoom sessions, please have at least a yoga block, strap, and blanket.
Who is the series for:
This series is designed for people living with ongoing back pain. It may not be appropriate if you have a recent or acute back injury, pregnancy-related back discomfort, or new or worsening symptoms that haven’t been assessed by a healthcare professional. If you’re unsure whether the series is right for you, please check with your healthcare provider before joining.
How to book:
Once you have purchased the series, you will then be able to book six individual classes according to your schedule. Scheduling once per week is ideal, but it can be more or less frequent depending on your preference. You can schedule as many classes you want in advance, or schedule week to week. My availabilty is shown 42 days (6 weeks) in advance.
You can book sessions in person or on Zoom. The 6 classes can be a mix of these two, or all one.
The package includes six sessions, intended to be used within eight weeks of purchase. The series expires within 10 weeks of your first session, unless otherwise arranged. Don't stress about this - life happens. If it needs to be longer, just let me know.
Keep an open mind:
This approach to back pain requires an open mind and a willingness to increase your awareness of sometimes subtle signs and compensations in the body. The exercises may seem basic or small. You may puzzle over an extended session on your rib cage or shoulders. Trust the process!
